In the mid-1800s it was estimated that two-thirds of the country’s wool production was processed in . European merchant settlers brought money and prestige and with it the city became known as the wool capital of the world.

Today, is a centre of commerce and finance but the legacies of its industrial past are still evident in wonderful buildings and architecture. The Grade 1 listed City Hall with its Italianate clock tower and the gothic styled Wool Exchange provide two fine examples.
