Exeter has been inhabited for approximately 2000 years through every significant period of English history. Traces of each period are still present today despite a quarter of the City having been destroyed during the Second World War. Founded by the Romans it is now a thriving Cathedral and University City, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the sea.

The current Guildhall building in the High Street dates from 1330, although records show a Guildhall existed on the same site at least as far back as 1160. This is reputed to be the oldest municipal building in the country still in full civic use. Until around 1830 the Stocks were present in the middle arch of the building.
