Hereford is an ancient cathedral city, and important market centre which attracts visitors from far and wide to its busy livestock and general markets held each Wednesday. Dominating the city of Hereford is the superb Norman Cathedral dating from the 11th century. The cathedral contains some of the finest examples of architectural excellence from Norman times up to the present day.
Adjacent to the Cathedral is The Mappa Mundi & Chained Library, famous for housing both the spectacular medieval map of the world and the cathedral’s unique Chained Library, which contains a collection of 1,400 chained books and 227 manuscripts dating from the 8th to the 15th centuries.
Shopping is made easy in High Town, the focal point of the city, where many of the high street names can be found. The large central pedestrian area is alive with entertainers and activity throughout the year Hereford Museum shows aspects of Herefordshire history whilst the Art Gallery has regularly changing exhibitions of paintings, prints, photography and craft work. The Old House, in the heart of the city, is one of the countyýs finest examples of a black and white building, furnished in 17th century style on three floors.
