Inverness is a historic city in the north-west Highlands of Scotland situated in the fertile coastal plain of the Great Glen where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth. Inverness is referred to as the ‘Capital of the Highlands’, granted royal burgh status from David I in 1158. Inverness is known as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ and the area is famous as the home of ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster, St Columba reported the first sighting of the ‘water-beast’ c565.

Inverness started as a Pictish stronghold ruled by King Brude c400, residing in a fort on Craig Phadrig, a forested hill 2.4 km west, above the city, although the ‘Clava Cairns’ indicate the area has been inhabited longer. The Battle of Culloden fought on Culloden Moor in 1746 ended the Jacobite Rising; the large Battlefield is now an attraction with a visitor centre. Historic structures include the nearby 18th century Fort George; the Caledonian Canal built in 1820 and Inverness Castle built c1830, now the sheriff-court.

The Old High Church is the oldest building with its medieval church tower. The railway arrived in1870 enhancing the tourist industry; today Inverness is a busy city with accommodation to suit all visitors from hostels to four star hotels and many historical and cultural attractions.
