Lancaster’s history can be traced back several thousand years and some of it has been remarkably bloodthirsty – public hangings, witchcraft and the slave trade have all been part of ’s history. In 1612 James I was in the throne and obsessed with witchcraft he made it a capital crime and Witchfinders travelled the country seeking out those who practiced this art.

To the South East of is Pendle Hill and it was here that the notorious case of the Pendle Witches was to begin its story resulting in the women from two local families who were subsequently hanged at Castle. This medieval castle was responsible for handing out more death sentences over the years than any other in the country, deserved its nickname “The Hanging Town” ’s history stretches back to Roman Times and previous visitors also included the Anglo-Saxons gaining a charter as a market town in 1193.

It wasn’t until King George VI’s coronation in 1937 though that became a city. It was however during the 1800’s that ’s wealth became apparent when many grand buildings were erected amongst them the former Town Hall in Market Square and now the City museum and the Palladian Custom House now the Maritime Museum. It has to be remembered that as well as industry making a contribution to the wealth of the City that the maritime trade also had a valuable role to play as the third busiest port in England after London and Bristol.
