Southend on Sea is a resort roughly 40 miles east of central London in Essex. Towns within the Borough of Southend on Sea include Chalkwell, Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea, Prittlewell, Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, Westcliff-on-Sea and their respective beaches. On the seafront, Southend Pier is the longest iron pleasure pier in the world measuring 1.33 miles to the end. From the Pier, the sand/shingle Jubilee Beach stretches eastwards through to Thorpe Bay.
The Pier Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of this famous landmark – including its many disasters. Adventure Island (the number one ‘free admission’ theme park in the South East), The Kursaal bowling alley and Casino, and Sea-Life Adventure are all to be found on the pier.
In August the Southend Carnival is opened along the Golden Mile with the lighting of the Southend Illuminations which continue until November. Parks and green spaces abound and with an 18-hole golf course and trotting track, Belfairs Park is widely regarded as the flagship green space for the area. Southend Planetarium is the only public planetarium in the South East outside of London, There are three theatres in the town.
