Barnsley has long suffered from less than average educational achievement when compared with the rest of the United Kingdom, but recent improvements in examination results have brought levels in line with the national average.

Barnsley College is one of the largest further and higher education establishments in Europe and is situated on a number of sites throughout the town centre, chiefly the Old Mill Lane Site, Eastgate House, The Sci Tech Centre, the Honeywell Site and the Construction centre.

The University of Huddersfield has recently opened a campus in the town on Church Street besides Barnsley Town Hall. This is known as the University Centre Barnsley. All 14 secondary schools in Barnsley are soon to be updated and replaced by Academy education centres. Barnsley’s resident football team, Barnsley F.C. play in the Championship of the English league. Their home ground is known as Oakwell Stadium, which is situated in Oakwell, just outside of the town centre.

The town has a Civic Theatre and an Arts Centre. Sean Bean made his stage debut at Rotherham Civic Theatre whilst still a student at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology.

Since the late 1990s Rotherham has consolidated its reputation as a popular and exciting clubbing destination. The principal clubbing area runs from the “Synergy” nightclub on Ship Hill down to “Liquid”. Rotherham has many Classic and Progressive Rock bands, helped by the Classic Rock Society, and has spawned many bands, such as Deadline, Saxon, Crimes of Passion, Jive Bunny, Bring Me the Horizon, Good Morning Liberty, and Disarm.

The Magna Science Adventure Centre which is built in a former steel works, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

Jamie Oliver’s television series Jamie’s Ministry of Food, is based in Rotherham and was recently broadcasted on Channel 4. Jamie aimed to make Rotherham “the culinary capital of the United Kingdom” by a his ‘Pass it on’ scheme. He tried to get the town’s inhabitants to learn how to cook fresh food and establish healthy eating as part of daily life^.  The town square, All Saints Square, uses a BBC big screen to show major sports and cultural events. Jarvis Cocker and Pulp played their first gig at Rotherham Arts Centre in 1980.

As can be guessed from its name, Doncaster has its roots in Roman times, when the fort of Caer Daun guarded an important crossing of the river Don, making the place a staging point on the land route between York and Lincoln. The town became known as Danum before it was Doncaster.

Castra means camp, so Doncaster was the camp (or fort) on the river Don. Throughout its history has remained an important point on the route between North and South. In the age of the stage coach Doncaster was a significant stopping point. When the railway age arrived the town flourished further, a major locomotive works being built there because of the town’s location and its coal mining. Coal mining peaked in the early 20th century, and disappeared in the 1970s and 80s.

The famous Mallard and Flying Scotsman engines were built there, part of an engineering tradition including tractor building, though that too is receding into history. Doncaster remains an important railway station, on the East Coast Mainline, and is said to be served by more train operating companies than any other, and to the west is the Railport serving traffic destined for the Channel Tunnel. There is now the new international Robin Hood airport serving the town, and it has tremendous road links, standing on the A1(M), the M18, and within minutes of the M1 and M62. The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1194 and a market charter in 1248, and the market is still going strong.
